In german and English are both Germanic languages with plenty of Latin and Greek thrown inside. There are many cognates, words which can be similar in both languages. For example: der Garten (garden), das Haus (residence), schwimmen (swim), singen (shout), braun (brown) and also ist (is). But also be cautious about "false friends" — words that look like something they're not. The German word bald (soon) has nothing regarding hair!
